![]() ![]() There are a few fun contributions from Giancarlo Giannini as the rather dishevelled police chief and a few cameos from Andy Garcia, but for the most part this is just four folks having a jolly time whilst those of us sitting down remember (or discover) just how beautiful Venice is. The last twenty minutes take us into cheesy territory that really did have me looking around the cinema at the ceiling thinking - "oh, just get on with it". What now ensues is a rather predictable and lightweight comedy drama that starts off entertainingly enough but runs out of steam quickly and permanently. "Carol" (Mary Steenbergen) comes up with the idea of a hen trip to Italy and after a bit of scepticism from "Diane" (Diane Keanton) and the timely death of the cat of judge "Sharon" (Candice Bergen) they embark on their trip of a lifetime. It's at this get-together that "Vivian" (Jane Fonda) announces that she - a lifelong opponent of the institution - is to marry "Arthur" (Don Johnson). That plot sees the group emerging from lockdown when they finally manage to meet for their routine bookclub. ![]() This appears to be a good excuse for four actors, who seem to get on quite well together, to get someone to fund an all expenses paid trip to Italy to make a movie underpinned by the thinnest of plots. ![]()

Those who follow my blog know that two indie fiction authors I regularly put in the outstanding category are Shayne Parkinson (historical fiction) and Vicki Tyley (mystery). I do not mean to imply that to be outstanding an author must demonstrate all of these characteristics, but rather the author must have more than one to be outstanding and the more the author has, the more outstanding the writing. ![]() I firmly believe that there are several characteristics that define the writing of an outstanding author. (And no, there is no fairy tale ending in this ebook, which is supposed to be the first in a series that features these characters.) Unlike too many indie ebooks, Jameson has crafted a fine suspense tale but an even finer story about a Lord and a commoner, a modern-day Cinderella tale, yet one with believable characters. Ice Blue is a 5-star British mystery that involves Scotland Yard and the tensions between social classes that pervade the English cultural and social milieu. ![]() Last night I finished reading Ice Blue by Emma Jameson and am sorry that I finished - because the next book in the series is not yet available and I want more! The book is well-edited, well-written, and well-formatted, indicating that the author cares about the reader’s experience, a sense that too many indie books fail to communicate. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Click ‘Customise Cookies’ to decline these cookies, make more detailed choices, or learn more. Not being a fan doesn’t mean I actively dislike the genres it just means they have to offer something special in addition. Still, even a cursory glance at my Top 100 Comics list will reveal numerous books from both genres entrenched even as far up as my Top 10, so clearly my lack of adoration for the genres isn’t the end of the story. The idea of watching a hero overcome great odds to save the princess, the town, the nation, or the world is a tired device. Even though I loved the original BSG as a kid. When I hear of a new Battlestar Galactica, I can’t be bothered to care any more than I would for the news that there was a new Civil War show coming out this Fall. The ideas just don’t excite me like they once may have-I presume that decades ago, when I self-identified as a sci-fi fan, these things genuinely did excite me. A world populated by robots? A dystopian future of genetic manipulation? Star-spanning empires and the rebels that seek their liberation from those empires? I always have a sense of been there and done that. I’ve found that the idea of a science fiction world isn’t enough to spark my interest. Recently, it’s come to my attention that maybe I’m not really a fan of science fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Menzies takes a tremendous dump on the sensibilities of his readers, bombarding us with outrageous claims backed up with erroneous facts and arrogant speculation.
